Assuming you spend the money for high quality stuff the first time. With a kit, or roller, you get to put it in the stuff that lasts and works for a very long time, and is highly unlikely to ever fail. You'll be better off with the scte, because although it takes more to get into it, the cost of equipping the slash once you get tired of killing the traxxas electronics( it will happen eventually, the vxl is not made for 4x4 sc trucks) and sending them in for repair, it becomes the most expensive of the bunch really quickly. Now traxxas, they make great kits for getting into the hobby, but the elctronics aren't that great, and will need to be upgraded eventually. If you get the best the first time, you save money in the long run. A 550 brushless, or the new tekin 4 pole would power it easily, and the slash 4x4 will need a power plant upgrade eventually and then you need the same set up. IMO, get the slash so it's a fair race between friends and if you want to make it unique get a different body and give it a custom paint job. Most esc/motor combos will take either the associated or losi to well above the cost of the slash, plus TX/RX, servo, battery, etc. You'll be hard pressed to get either the SC10 or the Ten-SCTE up and running for anywhere close to what the slash costs. If you get the Losi Ten-SCTE you need a 1/8th scale power system (bigger motor and esc), which will bring up the costs.Ī slash VXL 4wd is about $390 at my LHS, an SC10 4wd team kit is $270 and the Ten-SCTE roller is $300. It won't hurt anything other than your bank account though, so it's your call. Novak and Tekin are both great, but they're more money than you need to be spending for bashing.
